*SPOILERS*

Award winning director JJ Abrams’s The Force Awakens has completely smashed the box office, and wowed fans everywhere. Rekindling the love and excitement of the original trilogy, there has definitely been an awakening.

From the outer rim, we follow the story of scavenger Rey, played by Daisy Ridley, and ex-Stormtrooper Finn. Having left The First Order due to some moral quandaries, FN-2187  (later named Finn by escapee Poe Dameron) becomes a pivotal part in Rey realising her connection with the Force.

The film takes place a good 30 years after Return of the Jedi, and the Empire is as relevant now as it was then. The newest bad guys The First Order are more cruel and less forgiving than Vader and his ilk. Later to be revealed to be Han and Leia’s son, Kylo Ren is a mean, crossblade-wielding psychopath, seduced by the Dark Side after Luke Skywalker failed to train a new era of Jedi.

The film is excellent. From start to finish, it’s captivating, and yes, there were tears as the opening credits rolled. With silent nods to the original trilogy, and a bunch of new cast members returning for the film, including Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher, there is an amazing dynamic between the new blood and the veterans from the Rebel Alliance. Nothing is more heart-warming than seeing a new era of young Padawans embrace what kids everywhere have been enjoying for the last three decades.

With a bunch of other Star Wars films coming out in the next few years, we have plenty to keep us sated until Episode VIII at the end of this year, and IX in 2017.
