Non League Watch: How are Gateshead FC Faring?

Writing for B**P, I often choose to focus on the trials and tribulations of Newcastle United, but once in a while it’s wise to take a step back. Quite a big step back: four leagues back actually.
That’s right, let’s take a look at Gateshead FC. The Tynesiders. The Heed Army. How are they doing this season?
Currently sitting in fifth place after six successive league victories, Gateshead is in contention for a playoff position (second to fifth placed are eligible for playoffs) whilst automatic promotion – awarded to the top placed team – looks unlikely. With 10 games left this season, the Tynesiders will be looking to consolidate their top five position and hold off the likes of Dover Athletic, Aldershot Town, and Barrow who are hot on their tail.
A 2-0 win over Wrexham last week brought Gateshead into the playoff places, which they hadn’t been comfortable in since the first month of the season. A victory in that game signifies the first time Gateshead have won six consecutive league games since promotion to the Nation League in 2009.
Having been held by Morecambe to a 1-1 draw on Tuesday night, Gateshead’s position is far from secure and the battling looks set to continue throughout the season.
Boasting a capacity of over 11,000, Gateshead International Stadium seems felicitous to the Football League and, after being defeated courtesy of Cambridge United in the playoff finals in 2013-14, the Heed Army will be hoping they can once again make it into, and out of, Wembley at the end of this season.
