New Year Blues

If you’re anything like us, you’ve realised one thing. 2016 wasn’t great. From the early days, with the death of beloved artist David Bowie, to spectacular actor Alan Rickman, to the very recent and ‘out of the blue’ death of Carrie Fisher, Princess Leia herself.
But let’s not dwell on that. We’ve already talked about how awful the year was here, so let’s talk about something else. What if we look at this in a different light? Everyone at this time of year always says the same thing, ‘Eeee it’s gone really quick this year, hasn’t it?’. Well, in a way, no. It’s gone the same as every other year. But the fact that it’s over just gives us an excuse to put it behind us. Mistakes were made this year, no matter what side of the fence you’re on. Brexit, Trump, and everything else in between. And yes this may sound like a ‘new-year new-me’ meme, but I’ll say it.
Learn from your mistakes.
We were very comfortable living in blissful ignorance when those who wanted to spit hate and divide us as a planet were under the rug, or locked outside. Now? One such man has the keys to the (White) house and there is still a ton of uncertainty surrounding our split from the EU.
So take it upon yourself personally to learn from the bigger mistakes we made as a globe. Don’t respond to disaster with venom or fear. Accept what happened and push through it. Like the LGBT community did after Orlando; like the many Native American tribes have done to ensure their land isn’t soiled with pipelines. Like Carrie Fisher’s dog did on Twitter:
Saddest tweets to tweet. Mommy is gone. I love you @carrieffisher

Uncertain times await us, folks. Stay strong. For the people around you, and the people around them. Work on your problems. Tackle them. And do not stop fighting.
Happy New Year, to all our followers and readers and writers. Admins and editors all.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to marathon the entirety of the original Star Wars films, and sob throughout the whole thing.
