Film Review: He Named Me Malala

The name Malala comes with great sacrifice and determination attached to it.  So when Malala Yousafzai’s father, Ziauddin Yousafzai, named her after a teenage girl who spoke out and was killed for doing so, it was almost a prophecy that she would fulfil.

Five years after being shot in the head by the Taliban in Swat Valley, Afghanistan, Malala has won the Nobel Peace Prize at the age of 18, opened schools and fought for girls’ rights to go to school. In the documentary film about her life, He Named me Malala, the world gets a glimpse of an extraordinary girl living a double life.

He Named me Malala shows two sides of the young woman who has captivated the world. At one particular point in the film, she talks about school and homework and how when she met with rock stars and presidents, she also had her GCSEs to do.

However, Malala is also presented as the beacon of light and hope that she truly is. When Miss Yousafzai speaks about education and girls, it is completely captivating and filled with passion. When Miss Yousafzai speaks about her father and her former home in Swat Valley, it is just as powerful. He Named me Malala is a film that everyone must watch. It guides you through a horror of terror, but shows you just what can happen when you give one girl an opportunity.
