This book may seem like something of an anomaly. Written in 1868 when her publisher requested she write something popular for girls, Alcott originally resisted, but eventually accepted the idea, writing this semi-autobiographical account of her life growing up with three sisters.

Achieving immediate commercial and popular success, the story has endured, and has since been adapted into a number of films, plays and radio plays.

Telling the story of sisters Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy, ‘Little Women’ is a coming of age story that still resonates with readers today. The girls work hard trying to find their place in the world, and to strengthen their relationships with one another.

Whilst there is a strong Christian theme that permeates the work, the focus is more on living an honest and loving life than any more pious aims, so the novel is still relevant to non-believers.

A passionate account of young girls turning into young women, this is one book that everyone should read.

By the same author: ‘Good Wives’, ‘Little Men’, ‘Jo’s Boys’ and more.
