Best songs from musicals

Here at b**p we love a good musical. They make you laugh, they make you cry, but most importantly, they make you SING! Here are five of the best songs to get you out of your seat and singing your heart out.

‘Solidarity’ from Billy Elliot

The musical is incredible, dealing with the political unrest surrounding the miner’s strikes in the north east in 1984-1985, as well the hopes and dreams of a boy who loves to dance. This song so perfectly combines both elements, and is a masterpiece of the crescendo! Warning – explicit lyrics!

‘The Bitch of Living’ from Spring Awakening

This 2006 musical is a tumultuous mess of teenage angst and sexuality, and this song is a great embodiment of most of the things everyone in the play is feeling but nobody dares to say. The cast included Lea Michele and Jonathan Groff, but that’s not the only reason we love it!

‘Hello’ from The Book of Mormon

The Book of Mormon is a religious satire in musical form. What’s not to love? This song is about as catchy as it gets and you’ll find yourself humming it in the shower, on the bus and *ahem* at church…?

‘For Now’ from Avenue Q

Everyone knows Avenue Q for the great big Sesame Street-style puppets onstage alongside the actors. However, when you throw in songs such as ‘For Now’, you’ve got a full-on philosophy for your life! Whether you find the message uplifting or it throws you into the depths of an existential crisis, there’s something for everyone to take away.

‘You Can’t Stop the Beat’ from Hairspray

Let’s finish with a dance number! Hairspray tells the story of a tubby teen who loves to dance. This song is for everyone who likes to groove around their bathroom with a hairbrush as a microphone.

What have we missed? What’s your favourite musical song?
