Top 5 Elton John Songs

5 July 2019

By Lauren E. White

Elton John is undoubtedly one of the greatest performers and artists of all time. His songs will long outlive him, and his stage presence will be felt for a long time after his retirement when the Farwell Yellow Brick Road Tour comes to an end. And, in light of this and the Elton biopic Rocketman‘s huge success, we’ve narrowed down the top 5 Elton John songs for all those fans out there.

1. Rocket Man

We had to begin with the obvious: Rocket Man. It’s Elton’s nickname for himself, and the name of the biopic in which he had significant involvement in making.

Rocket Man is an iconic Elton John song, and it captures something melancholic, yet excellent, about the human condition and life itself. There’s something whimsical about this song, and also something painfully sad and lonely about it. Perhaps it captures the struggles of being a star.

Whatever Rocket Man‘s about, it is without doubt one of the greatest Elton John songs of all time.

2. Are You Ready For Love?

If you ask me, Are You Ready For Love? is one of the most romantic songs in the history of music, let alone of Elton John’s work.

It’s a very chill tune, and yet it manages to capture all the glory and campness of Elton in the incredibly clever use of the violin and trumpet leading up to and during the chorus. Are You Ready For Love? is cheery and cheesy and genuinely loveable.

For me, it’s the lyrics that make this song in the top 5 Elton John songs. It’s about utter devotion and, to me, it’s about true love.

3. The Bitch Is Back

It’s not the most well-known Elton John song out there, but The Bitch Is Back is still a popular song among his fans – and for good reason.

A power song if there ever was one, The Bitch Is Back is one of Elton’s most upbeat, quick and catchy songs that gives you all the confidence you need when you’ve been knocked down. It doesn’t matter why you’re feeling down, this song will lift you out of it with its compelling electric guitars and spirring vocals from Elton John himself.

If you don’t know this one, it’s time to enlighten your life.

4. Something About The Way You Look Tonight

I never realised just how long this song title was until I typed it out, but that’s okay because it’s such a good song, you just don’t mind. Elton John slows it down in this one, and it’s a true lovesick ballad if there ever was one.

It could be your heartbreak song or your wedding song – this one is genuinely incredible. And, once again, the lyrics make Something About The Way You Look Tonight what it is. They make the soft tune worth it, and they carry it through, which is not something we hear that often in an Elton song.

5. Don’t Go Breaking My Heart

Of course, we had to end on one of Elton John’s biggest bangers: Don’t Go Breaking My Heart featuring Kiki Dee. This is an exciting, upbeat and quite humble duet between the two; one that gets you in a great mood and one that you can sing along to super easily.

Don’t Go Breaking My Heart is true Elton John, and for that reason, it occupies the final place in our list of the top 5 Elton John songs. Duets are cool!
