Tips for Body Confidence

In a world where both women (and men) are told that you are only valid if you look a certain way, body confidence is not the easiest thing to have in one’s possession. However, in a world where you can be anything, body confidence is something we can achieve. It’s often a slow process, but it’s a worthwhile journey – and here are our top tips for it.

  1. Begin by wearing clothes you’re comfortable in

Body confidence can be hugely helped by the clothes you wear. If you’re thin, you’re generally expected to wear tight, short skirts, shorts and dresses when you go out, or skinny jeans and tight tops. But if you’re not comfortable with that, you don’t need to.

Wear whatever clothes make you feel comfortable. The kind of comfortable that makes you feel pretty. That’s where you should begin.

  1. Find a style which suits you

Again, body confidence can begin with style. If you’re a young woman, a lot of make-up and fake tan is what is expected of you. But if that’s not your true style, don’t go there. You are you and whatever style you choose to adopt is beautiful.

Personally, I used to have a full face of makeup when I left the house. But in an effort to be more body confident, I slowly reduced the amount I wore, to the point where now I fill in my brows and put on lipstick and that’s it. You don’t need to rely on make-up to make you feel body confident, but if that’s your style, then you go ahead and own it.

It’s all about empowerment.

  1. Tattoos and piercings can make you love your body

If you’ve ever wanted a piercing or a tattoo, they can seriously boost your body confidence. They’re unique additions to you and you alone, and they can make you want to show off parts of your body you once never liked. Again, this is, of course, a very personal choice, but if you’re feeling held back by what others will think, remember that it is you who gets to make the final decision on your body.

Body confidence for me hit a peak when I got a tattoo on my inner bicep in April. After always hating my arms and covering them up even in the summer heat, I’ve found myself being able to wear short-sleeved and sleeveless tops now. Don’t underestimate the power of body art.

  1. Get to know your body

A lack of body confidence can sometimes come from a lack of knowledge about it. Knowledge about your body can come in all forms. It means knowledge of what your body actually does (and how incredible it is at it) and knowledge of how you can make it your own and know it like an old friend.

Body confidence can sometimes be achieved by knowing your body as your vessel to get through life. It’s your ship to ride the stormy seas with, and so you should respect and love it as it loves you. It sounds odd at first, but once you begin to view your body as you view your brain (as a wonderful, thinking, receptive object), you begin to add to your body confidence.

  1. Look after your body

One way to achieve body confidence is to look after it. Treat your body to nutritious food, some junk food. Look after it by exercising (but not excessively) and resting it when it needs to be rested. Looking after your body is something that will definitely make you more confident about it.

It is another way of getting to know yourself, and one I’d absolutely recommend.

Good luck on your road to body confidence!
