Beamish Museum is a place that we all know and love, here in the North East, so we’re sure it will make you very happy to know that they have received a grant of £10.9 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

With this funding, a major project called ‘Remaking Beamish’ will be underway, and a 1950s town will be built, featuring a cinema, shops, and houses, developing the area further. It is the largest single investment ever seen at Beamish. Visitors will even be able to stay overnight, which is just ideal as you do truly need to spend more than one day at Beamish to discover everything to its full potential.

The project will add to the existing attractions at Beamish and will take about four years to complete – don’t worry, the museum will remain open for visitors throughout.

If you want to find out more information about what specifically will be built, you can find out here.

This project will have a significant impact on the local community, expected to create almost 100 new jobs as well as over a thousand training opportunities. As well as this, on top of the 700,000 visitors that Beamish already attracts each year, it is expected that another 100,000 will be brought to the region.

Richard Evans, Beamish’s Director, said:

This is just incredible news – and I am so proud of everyone at Beamish who has worked so hard to achieve this amazing success.

The project is the result of years of careful planning – with staff and volunteers working alongside people from across the North East so we can tell their story. We couldn’t do this without the help and support of local people – and are so grateful for the donations we have received of buildings, objects and stories.

I hope people from all across the country will enjoy seeing the new exhibits being created in the museum over the next four years. These are exciting times for everyone who cares for Beamish – our visitors, supporters, staff and volunteers. This is the most ambitious project we’ve ever undertaken – building on our successful growth in recent years – so we can all achieve even more in the future.

This truly is a great opportunity for the region to show off what it can do, and to reminisce on the great wonders of the past. We certainly look forward to it, and we hope you do too!
